Your Camp Director
Hi, I'm Sam Burton, and I'm excited to welcome your child to camp! Originally from Baltimore, I've proudly called Wilmington home for the past five years. I'm a Health and Physical Education teacher, and working with kids — helping them grow, learn, and build confidence — is something I'm truly passionate about.
I've been playing chess since I was 8 years old, and it had a lasting impact on how I approached learning, problem-solving, and challenges in the classroom. That experience is what inspired me to create this camp — to give kids the same advantage in a fun, supportive, and engaging environment.
At camp, our focus goes beyond just learning the game of chess. We emphasize learning through games rather than lectures, building confidence instead of focusing only on winning, and creating an environment where kids feel encouraged to try, think, and grow. With my background in physical education, I also incorporate movement and outdoor activities so campers stay active, enjoy the sunshine, and have a well-rounded summer experience.
My goal is simple: for every child to leave camp having learned something new, built confidence, and made lasting summer memories.
When I'm not teaching or playing chess, you'll likely find me surfing, playing soccer, spending time at the beach, or enjoying time with my family. I'm also fortunate to have my wife, Bri — who is also a teacher — helping run the camp. Together, we're committed to creating a positive, safe, and memorable experience for every camper.
We look forward to meeting your family and making this a great summer for your child!
